Origin

This game comes from Japan, and was introduced in Europe about 1880. It´s an heir to the complex and ancient strategy game Go (actually the similarity lies only in the board and the pieces).

There are lots of variants of this game according to the limitations of the possible moves and the option to make captures. The version that can be played here is the more simple and widely used.

Description

The board has 361 squares distributed in 19 rows and 19 columns; each of the two players uses different coloured pieces (usually, black and white).

Objective

The objective is to make a straight line (vertical, horizontal or diagonal) with 5 pieces of the own colour.

How the game goes on

The player who uses the black pieces starts the game; both players will make one move by turn.

One move entails in placing one piece in an empty square of the board. The pieces inside the board cannot be moved again.
